19:26   What Modi gifted Irish PM
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today presented to his Irish counterpart reproductions of a selection of historic manuscripts and papers pertaining to two Raj-era Irish officials, Thomas Oldham and George Abraham Grierson, in recognition of their contributions in India.

Modi also gifted Irish premier Enda Kenny a specially handcrafted piece of silver, marble and roughly-hewn sandstone rock that imagines the Irish symbol of shamrock as a votive candle-stand or an 'aarti' lamp, with a peacock perched by the side of shamrock leaves, along with silver-tipped crystal dewdrops signifying serenity and purity.

The original manuscripts and papers which Modi presented to Kenny are preserved in the National Archives of India.

Born in Dublin, Oldham (1816-1878) was appointed as geological surveyor in 1850 to conduct a survey in India and his services were placed with the then Government of Bengal. He assumed charge in March 1851 and his joining day is celebrated as the foundation day of the Geological Survey of India. Apart from conducting the first systematic coal mapping of India -- and later initiating mapping of other minerals -- he wrote extensively on the fossils of India.

Grierson (1851-1941) was an Irish civil servant and philologist who, starting 1898, conducted the first Linguistic Survey of India. The Survey was later published over several years during 1903-28. It was Grierson's Survey that provided the first scientifically-based taxonomy of the Indo-Aryan languages within which the linguistic status of various forms of Hindi, Urdu and other Indo-Aryan speech forms is based.

The separation of Hindi into Western and Eastern dialect zones is the direct result of Grierson's classification efforts. As a student of mathematics at Trinity College, Dublin, Grierson took prizes in Sanskrit and Hindi.

Grierson went to Bengal in October 1873, where, in addition to carrying out his duties in a succession of government posts until 1898, he devoted much time to language research.

Two of his most important works are Seven Grammars of the Dialects and Sub-dialects of the Bihari Language (1883-87) and Bihar Peasant Life (1885). The latter work, in addition to offering much linguistic information, describes the life, farming methods, and beliefs of the Bihar peasantry. In 1994, India instituted an award in his honour that is given to foreign scholars who have made significant contributions to Hindi.

17:13   Muslim Americans welcome first NY Eid school holiday
New York marks a milestone in the fight for equality when 1.1 million children in America's largest school district will take the day off to mark Eid al-Adha.

It is a small but hard-won victory at a time when American Muslims complain of growing Islamophobia and worsening anti-Muslim rhetoric following the 9/11 attacks in 2001.

For the first time, more than 1,800 public schools in New York will close for the Muslim feast of sacrifice, a day after also closing for Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. Mayor Bill de Blasio unveiled the new policy in March, announcing that New York public schools would get two days off for Eid al-Fitr, which falls during the summer, and Eid al-Adha, in addition to major Christian and Jewish holidays. Since then, city hall has added a further day off -- February 8, 2016 -- for Lunar New Year, celebrated by Asian-Americans.

Dear Devendraji,

Firstly, I wish to thank you for replying to my open letter and creating space for a public debate. This is a sign of a truly healthy democracy and is rare for a politician in this day and age. I truly appreciate that a big politician chooses to reply to a humble columnist: Doesn't happen too often in an age where the media is a soft target. However, while I do not wish this to become a "tu tu main main", I must reserve the right to reply."

16:24   Times Group now says journalists' salaries will be linked to their Tweets
Last year in August, the Times Group asked its employees to hand over their Twitter and Facebook accounts' passwords to the company.

It said that journalists could have a personal handle but they couldn't use it to post news related stuff. When media outlets reported on the development not-so-flatteringly, the group tried convincing journalists that it was in their "interest' to give up on the personal handle and have one integrated account.

No one obviously bought that and the process never really took off.

And that, one thought, was that. But, not really, it seems.

Almost exactly a year later, the group has made it clear that it means business (like always) -- and journalists must adhere to its social media policy. Read more

15:27   Dramatic U-turn: AAP says NO corruption case against Sheila Dikshit
The Aam Aadmi Party government has not initiated any corruption case against former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit, though the party had during the Assembly election campaign alleged irregularities during her tenure as CM.

Replying to an RTI query on the complaints received by it, the Delhi government has stated that only one complaint was received from a Ludhiana-based resident against her.

The application from Lucknow-based RTI applicant Sanjay Sharma was forwarded by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's office to Directorate of Vigilance to provide information on cases registered by the present government.

The vigilance department forwarded it to Anti-Corruption Branch which said no such information is available in its record. AAP had raked up the issue of alleged corruption during the tenure of Dikshit as Chief Minister in the election campaign and had swept the Assembly polls early this year.

14:38   Sentencing in 7/11 case on Sept 30, prosecution asks for death
The public prosecutor in the 7/11 Mumbai train blasts case has sought the death sentence for eight of the 12 convicts. Calling the convicts 'mechants of death', the prosecutor said they deserve the death sentence. The sentencing will be heard on September 30. The prosecution has asked for life sentence for four convicts.

A special MCOCA court is expected to pronounce the quantum of sentence to the 12 men convicted for their involvement in the July 11, 2006 Mumbai suburban train bombings.

Twelve people were convicted last week by a special court in Mumbai in the serial blasts that killed 188 people. Those convicted are Kamal Ahamed Ansari, 37, Tanvir Ahmed Ansari, 37, Mohammad Faisal Shaikh, 36, Ehtesham Siddiqui, 30, Mohammad Majid Shafi 32, Shaikh Alam Shaikh, 41, Mohammad Sajid Ansari, 34, Muzzammil Shaikh 27, Soheil Mehmood Shaikh, 43, Zamir Ahmad Shaikh, 36, Naveed Hussain Khan, 30, and Asif Khan, 38.

Designated MCOCA Judge Yatin D Shinde had on September 11 held them guilty of complicity in the crime while acquitting 34-year-old Abdul Wahid Shaikh, also an accused, in the case.

They were found guilty of planting bombs in local trains which exploded at various stations in the peak hours in the evening.

All the twelve convicts found guilty in the case, had pleaded for leniency in the court on the point of sentence citing humanitarian grounds.

The judge had called each convict before him and recorded their respective statements on the quantum of sentence to be awarded to them.

The arguments on the quantum of sentence has been going on for the last few days.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and his Jharkhand counterpart Raghubar Das are the only BJP chief ministers on the list. BJP president Amit Shah is also among the star campaigners.

Since the formation of the Modi government at the Centre in May 2014, Advani and Joshi have been sidelined in the BJP and restricted to the party's Margdarshak Mandal.

In the past, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar accused the BJP of "dumping" party veterans like Advani and Joshi as they didn't figure in the election posters of the BJP in Bihar soon after the announcement of poll dates.

This comes in the aftermath of a BJP MLA's statement yesterday seeking a ban on the organisation after a Sanatan Sanstha member was arrested in connection with the murder of Left leader Govind Pansare, for "creating terror" like Students and Islamic Movement of India (SIMI).

Sanatan Sanstha, headquartered at Ramnathi Ashram in North Goa district, is under the scanner since the arrest of Sameer Gaikwad in connection with Pansare's killing earlier this year and the alleged role of absconding member Rudra Patil in the 2009 Madgaon blast.

Taking a dig at RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat's call for review of reservation policy, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Wednesday said  that the Sangh is like a supreme court to BJP and added that such thought is dangerous for the country.

"The recent comments by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on the issue of reservation clearly shows that he thinks that the present status of the reservation policy is not right. The RSS wants an extra-constitutional committee to decide who gets quotas and who doesn't. This is a dangerous thought," he said.

12:52   Somnath Bharti's wife thanks Kejriwal for asking husband to surrender
A "surprised" Lipika Mitra today thanked Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for asking her husband and AAP MLA Somnath Bharti to "surrender" in a case of attempt to murder and domestic violence filed by her.

Police teams are looking for the Malviya Nagar MLA since yesterday after the Delhi High Court rejected his anticipatory bail in the case.

"It's good that the Chief Minister has finally spoken out albeit after taking so much time. I am grateful to him," Mitra said.

Expressing her surprise over Kejriwal's stand, she wondered why AAP made Bharti speak on a issue like 'women empowerment' during a one-day special session of the Delhi Assembly in August.

"Considering they were defending him and made him speak on such issues I am definitely surprised that the Chief Minister has taken this stand... He should act as a CM first and friend later," she said.

On being told that Bharti was avoiding arrest as he may appeal in the Supreme Court, Mitra said, "Whoever is advising him is definitely not his well-wisher. Police is doing what it can. He should come out and cooperate with police," she said.

Earlier in the day when asked about Mr. Gandhi at AICC briefing, Mr. Surjewala said, "Rahulji is travelling abroad on a short personal visit and will return shortly. We reject all rumours stating otherwise. He will continue to lead the party's Bihar campaign as also in the rest of the country."

He was asked whether Gandhi had gone to London today and whether it meant that he had gone on another sabbatical.

Early this year, Mr. Gandhi had gone abroad on a 56-day sabbatical when the budget session of Parliament had commenced and that led to much talk and speculation in political circles.

10:25   Pakistan says it will not ask India to play bilateral series anymore
The chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board Shaharyar Khan has said that the PCB would no longer ask India to play the bilateral series planned in the UAE in December.

"I think we have said enough about the series and we are not going to ask them anymore. The ball is in their court now and they now have to decide and inform us about the fate of the series," Khan told reporters.

The former diplomat, in his most strong statement on the coming series and relations with India, said the PCB had done enough on its part to show its keenness to play the series and revive bilateral ties.

"I don't want to say anything more on the series. But what is causing us concern is that from what we know the letter we sent to the Indian board about the series has not gone to their government as yet," he said.

The PCB chief said if the Indian board backed out of the series which Pakistan is supposed to host it would approach the ICC and other member boards. "The series is part of a proper MOU signed between the two boards and we will pursue this matter if required," he added.

Khan said that Pakistan's stance remained clear that cricket and politics shouldn't be mixed. "Relations between the two countries have been tense in the past as well but we still played cricket. But since 2007 India has not played a test against us. We will not run after them now it is their turn to decide and realise the importance of reviving bilateral cricket ties."

03:49   Rahul Gandhi leaves for US to 'attend global meet'
Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi has left for the United States, triggering confusion about the purpose of his visit.

Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala on Tuesday night said, "Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi is travelling to Aspen, US on a short visit to attend a conference. The conference is expected to be attended by global leaders from various domains, both from government and private sectors."

He, however, did not give dates about the conference or the duration of the visit.

03:37   Man behind Maggi ban moved out of FSSAI, shifted to Niti Aayog
Food safety watchdog FSSAI's CEO Yudhvir Singh Malik, the man behind the ban of global giant Nestle's popular noodle brand Maggi, has been moved out and shifted as Additional Secretary in Niti Aayog.

Malik, a 1983 batch IAS officer of Haryana cadre, was appointed to the post of Chief Executive Officer in Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) under Health and Family Welfare Ministry, only in September last year.

The Appointments Committee of Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the appointment of Malik as additional secretary in the Niti Aayog, an order issued by Personnel Ministry said.

He has been appointed in the newly created post by cancelling the appointment of Keshni Anand Arora, his batch mate from the same cadre.

It was during Malik's tenure that samples of Maggi noodle samples were subjected to lab tests which found that it contained added Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) and lead in excess of the permissible limit.

FSSAI had on June 5 banned the instant snack that has had a level of global resonance that's unprecedented for the Indian food regulator.

02:45   Ayodhya 'lifts' meat ban for Eid
Times of India reports: While Muslims of Musahra village in Uttar Pradesh's Sant Kabir Nagar are struggling for their right to offer qurbani (sacrifice) on Eid ul-Zuha, Ayodhya presents a contrast to the situation.

There is total ban on slaughter and sale of meat throughout the year in the temple town. But this curb is unofficially lifted during three days of Eid.

Muslims perform qurbani as well as distribute meat. No sadhu or mahant has ever raised any objection. Nothing special about it. But, with bans becoming order of the day, Ayodhya stands out in this regard.

Barring three days of Eid, even cooked meat cannot be served publicly as per an Ayodhya Municipal Board (AMB) order.

Muslims residents say they have been performing qurbani without any hindrance for generations.

02:26   Politicians throw eggs at Kosovo prime minister on live television
Politicians pelted Kosovo's prime minister Isa Mustafa with eggs live on television as he addressed the parliament, protesting a deal with former master Serbia which gives greater local powers to minority Serbs in the young Balkan country.

During a speech by the prime minister broadcast live on Kosovo television, several opposition politicians suddenly stood and began throwing eggs at him.

Mustafa's bodyguard rushed to shield him with an umbrella.

The opposition in majority-Albanian Kosovo, which declared independence from Serbia in 2008, is angry over a deal brokered by the European Union last month giving Kosovo's small Serb minority more rights over municipal spending and education, and access to funding from Belgrade.

Parliament speaker Kadri Veseli halted the session, shouting "shame, shame, shame!" at the egg-throwing MPs.

02:20   Pope skips the limo in favor of tiny Fiat
Pope Francis, who is on his first visit to the US, avoided travelling by a fancy limousine and instead took a more modest ride shortly after his plane touched down at Andrews Air Force Base outside Washington.

After being received by US President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama, Pope Francis got into the backseat of a small, black Fiat -- then promptly rolled the windows down, allowing him to look out and smile at the watching crowds.

Seconds later, the pope's car began rolling away. The pope offered a final wave before departing.

02:09   Obamas receive Pope Francis at the airport
Pope Francis landed on US soil for the first time on Tuesday, launching a six-day visit that will highlight his love for the poor and his willingness to tackle the nation's most significant political, social and economic controversies.

In an unprecedented welcome for a foreign dignitary, President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama and their daughters along with Vice President Joe Biden and his family traveled to Joint Base Andrews outside Washington to greet the pontiff, who arrived from Cuba.

The flags of the United States and the Vatican flapped in a blustery breeze from the cockpit windows of the pope's chartered Italian jet as it rolled to a stop near a line of priests in black and red robes and a group of schoolchildren from local Catholic schools.

The Argentine-born pope appeared at the top of the stairs of the plane, smiled and removed his skullcap so it would not be blown away by the wind. Obama greeted him at the foot of the steps with a handshake and a warm smile.

Obama will roll out an official welcoming ceremony for Francis on the South Lawn of the White House on Wednesday. The pope will then parade through downtown Washington in his Popemobile, with thousands of people expected to line the sidewalks. He'll hold a canonization later in the day at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.

Harry Potter fans have some homework to do.

J K Rowling has written a new article for the Pottermore site, going into the family history of the Potter family. It was released on the site Tuesday.

The article, simply title The Potter Family, traces the lineage of Harry's family all the way back to the 12th century, where they apparently descended from the wizard Linfred of Stinchcombe, a "locally well-beloved and eccentric man, whose nickname, 'the Potterer,' became corrupted in time to 'Potter.'"

The article also explains how the Potter family became in possession of the Invisibility Cloak, which helped Harry through all seven books of the series and became an important plot point in the final novel, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

00:53   Yemen crisis: President Hadi returns to Aden from exile
Yemen's president has returned to the southern city of Aden after six months in exile, his office says.

Officials at the city's airport confirmed a plane carrying Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi had landed on Tuesday.

A government source told the Reuters news agency Mr Hadi would spend the festival of Eid al-Adha in Aden before flying to New York to address the UN.

He fled Aden in late March as Houthi rebels advanced on the city, triggering air strikes by a Saudi-led coalition.

In July, pro-government militiamen and soldiers drove the Houthis and allied army units loyal to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh out of Aden with the help of coalition ground forces.

00:52   Volkswagen CEO says he's 'endlessly sorry' for tarnishing brand
Volkswagen AG's emissions scandal crisis escalated today as the company issued a profit warning, set aside billions to cover the fallout and lost billions more in market value.

VW's CEO said he is "endlessly sorry" that the world's top-selling carmaker squandered worldwide trust in its brand.

The rapid-fire developments came as Volkwagen stunningly admitted that some 11 million of the German carmaker's diesel vehicles worldwide contain software that evades emissions controls, not just the half a million cars that the US.
As its share price sunk for a second straight day, Volkswagen said it was setting aside around 6.5 billion euros ($7.3 billion) to cover the fallout. CEO Martin Winterkorn apologized for the deception under his leadership and pledged a fast and thorough investigation, but gave no indication that he might resign.

"Millions of people across the world trust our brands, our cars and our technologies," Winterkorn said Tuesday in a video message. "I am endlessly sorry that we have disappointed this trust. I apologize in every way to our customers, to authorities and the whole public for the wrongdoing." "We are asking, I am asking for your trust on our way forward," he said.

"We will clear this up." VW has yet to explain who installed the software, under what direction, and why.
