J&K government appoints new chief secretary

Mukhtar Ahmad reports from Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir government on Monday appointed senior IAS officer B R Sharma as the new chief secretary.

The state cabinet which met this morning appointed Sharma, principal secretary planning and development department, as the chief secretary to fill the vacancy created by the voluntary retirement of Mohammad Iqbal Khanday who had demitted office last month.

Khanday sought premature retirement, three months ahead of his due date following serious differences with the state government.

The differences cropped up after Khanday said he was not being consulted in administrative matters and was being bypassed.

Sharma, a 1984 batch IAS officer has held top positions in the various departments of the administration, including home and the planning and development departments.
