Sedition charges against Tamil singer for anti-Jaya lyrics

A folk singer has been arrested by the Chennai police for writing and singing a song in which he criticised the Tamil Nadu government for the alcoholism in the state.


The police have booked him for sedition for using alleged derogatory remarks against AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa in the lyrics. 


S Kovan, who is a member of the Makkal Kalai Ilakkiya Kazhagam, a performance group that deals with political issues, was arrested from his house in Trichy in the early hours today.


The song has reportedly gone viral after it was shared on WhatsApp and social media.  Kovan has been booked under various sections of the IPC, including 124 (A) (sedition), The Times of India reported.
