The bullet that killed him struck his neck, an area that was not protected by his bullet-proof jacket. He was critically injured in the counter-infiltration operation in the Manigah forest of Kupwara and died a few hours later. The son of a milkman, Mahadik stepped away from the family trade to join the Army. As a woman told NDTV, one in 10 homes in Pogarwadi village and in Satara, have somebody in the armed forces.
