As emergency workers suspended recovery operations for the night, there was still little clue as to what caused the crash of a Germanwings Airbus A320 in a remote area of the French Alps on Tuesday, killing all 150 on board.

A black box recorder has already been recovered from the crash site, but the remoteness of the area is likely to make further examination a slow and difficult process.

"The zone is snow-bound and inaccessible to vehicles, said French Transport Minister Alain Vidalies.

French Interior Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet said he expected "an extremely long and extremely difficult'' search and rescue operation because of the area's remoteness.

French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said a helicopter had managed to land near the crash site and that no survivors had been found. Aerial photographs showed smouldering wreckage and a piece of the fuselage with six windows.

The weather in the area deteriorated Tuesday afternoon, with a chilly rain falling, further hampering search efforts before they were suspended for the night.
