German professor apologises for 'rape problem' rejection

A German professor who rejected a male Indian student's application for an internship because of India's 'rape problem' has apologised.

Prof Annette Beck-Sickinger, a professor of biochemistry at Leipzig University in Germany, told an Indian applicant: "I don't accept any Indian male students for internships. We hear a lot about the rape problem in India ... I have many female students in my group, so I think this attitude is something I cannot support."

Her comments, published on social media sites, were condemned by Germany's ambassador to India as offensive to millions of law-abiding Indians.
