On the 40th anniversary of the Emergency, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said, "Nobody can forget June 25-26 when the nation was turned into a jail and bound with chains of Emergency for lust of power 40 years back. Forty years later, we want to preserve the dreams under which all citizens prosper under a democratic system. Our decision to set up a memorial for Jai Prakash Narain will always inspire those who love democracy."

"We mark 40 years of one of India's darkest periods the Emergency, when the then political leadership trampled over our democracy," he tweeted.

"A vibrant liberal democracy is the key to progress. Let us do everything possible to further strengthen our democratic ideals and ethos," he said. The PM recalled that lakhs of people had resisted the Emergency declared by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on this day in 1975.
