Islamic State militants staged multiple attacks on the Syrian Kurdish strongholds of Kobani and Hasakah on Thursday, in a clear warning to the Kurdish militias and moderate opposition forces who are slowly advancing toward Raqqa, the extremists' de facto Syrian capital.

Some three dozen militants penetrated Kobani's lightly guarded city limits at dawn, residents and Kurdish officials said. Disguised as Kurdish militants and moderate opposition Free Syrian Army fighters, members of the extremist group sneaked into Kobani in five cars, they said.
