A two minute problem

The Maggi muddle has resulted in the destruction of over Rs 320 crore worth of packed noodles. That is only a small part of the story. The real story is the poor state of our public hygiene, the poor regulation of foods, drugs and cosmetics, the consequent blas attitude of many manufacturers towards safety standards, and the many thousands of almost wholly unregulated small, medium and large enterprises that produce these products. Sadly, this failure of the government in doing its regulatory job exists in all spheres -- water, sanitation, power, roads -- to name the principal ones. There is no accountability of government servants, no punishment for carelessness and even corruption.
