June 25, 2015  08:22
On the 40th anniversary of the Emergency, which was imposed by Indira Gandhi back on June 25 1975, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweets about 'India's darkest period'. In a series of tweets, he writes, "We mark 40 years of one of India's darkest periods- the Emergency, when the then political leadership trampled over our democracy. Inspired by the call of JP, several men & women across India selflessly immersed themselves in the movement to safeguard our democracy."

He added that India should be proud of the lakhs of people who resisted the Emergency and whose efforts ensured that 'our democratic fabric be preserved'.

In his last tweet, the PM wrote, "A vibrant liberal democracy is the key to progress. Let us do everything possible to further strengthen our democratic ideals & ethos."
