Just in: Indian weather bureau says monsoon has kept its date with Kerala today. The monsoon, which was initially expected to arrive in Kerala on May 30, was delayed by about five days.

Monsoon hitting Kerala marks the official onset of the rainy season in the country. The normal onset date of monsoon in India is June 1. The MeT department has initially said that monsoon would hit the southern state on May 30, but later revised it to June 5, blaming its sluggish pace.

The Centre has already warned states to formulate contingency plans to deal with the situation as the country stares at its first drought in six years after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) lowered its monsoon forecast for this year to deficient.
