The Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation has banned the sale of Maggi Noodles across the state through its outlets. This comes after reports that samples of Maggi tested in Uttar Pradesh tested in a lab showed that it contains more than permissible amount of monosodium glutamate (MSG) and lead, both hazardous to human health. It was found that Maggi contains 17 parts per million lead, while the permissible limit is only 0.01 ppm.

Food and Civil Supplies minister Anoop Jacob has directed civil supplies corporation to stop the sale Maggi noodles with immediate effect.

The corporation has intimated that the ban will continue till a clarity on the quality of the product is determined. The unsold stock will be returned to the company.

Nestl India Ltd. which owns the Maggi brand, has attempted to quell growing consumer fears over the safety of its Maggie 2-Minute Noodles, and said that it had tested samples from more than 1,000 batches of the popular snack and found them to contain acceptable levels of lead.
