22:07   Headscarf case: Muslim woman wins in US Supreme Court
The Supreme Court ruled in favor of a Muslim woman who has sued retailer Abercrombie & Fitch when the store failed to hire her because she wore a head scarf in observance of her religion.

The court ruled 8-1 that the company failed to accommodate Samantha Elauf's religious needs when she was not hired on the basis that her hijab violated company dress policy. Justice Clarence Thomas dissented with part of the ruling but concurred with the rest.

The retailer had argued that Elauf couldn't succeed without first showing that the employer had "actual knowledge" of her need for a religious accommodation. But the Court disagreed and sent the case back to the lower court for further consideration.

"An applicant need show only that his need for an accommodation was a motivating factor in the employer's decision, not that the employer had knowledge of his need," Justice Antonin Scalia wrote for the majority.

The controversy began in 2008 when then 17-year-old Samantah Elauf sought a job with the retailer. Prior to the interview, Elauf was nervous she might not be hired because of the black headscarf that she wears for religious reasons. She interviewed with assistant manager Heather Cooke, however, and although she was told that the company's "look policy" meant she shouldn't wear a lot of make up, black clothing or nail polish, her head scarf never came up.

21:52   ISIS attacks with explosive-laden tank
At least 34 Iraqi police officers were killed and at least 48 more wounded Monday when an ISIS fighter drove a tank rigged with explosives into a joint Iraqi security forces base about 28 kilometers (17 miles) southwest of Samarra, two security officials told CNN.

The attack happened at 3 a.m. local time. A medical source at a Balad hospital confirmed the deaths and number of those injured.

Security officials said that guards stationed at the base's entrance fired at the tank but couldn't stop it.

The tank shoved aside two Humvees that blocked the entrance just before the ISIS driver detonated the tank. That explosion, near a stack of ammunition, triggered another blast. The commander of an Iraqi brigade is among the wounded, the officials said.

21:22   Sonia writes PM on atrocities on Dalits
Congress President Sonia Gandhi today wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagging the "distressing rise" in incidents of Dalit atrocities and demanded that a bill to prevent such crimes is brought in the monsoon session of Parliament next month.

Referring to the incidents of Dalit atrocities in two-BJP ruled states Rajasthan and Maharashtra, the Congress President also alleged that the NDA  government had "allowed" an ordinance, brought by UPA, to lapse and slammed it for not bringing a bill to replace it in the last budget session of parliament.

Gandhi's letter to the Prime Minister comes a day before Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi visits Dalit icon B R Ambedkar's birthplace Mhow in Madhya Pradesh tomorrow to inaugurate the national launch of the year-long 125th birth anniversary celebrations of one of the architects of the Constitution.

20:49   US Patriot Act data program ends -- for now
The US government on Monday found itself with fewer tools to investigate terrorism -- at least temporarily -- after the Senate let provisions of the Patriot Act expire Sunday night.

While officials warned of national security risks, it is clear that the lapse will not come close to debilitating counterterrorism efforts.

The Senate entered a debate period late Sunday on the Patriot Act that pushed beyond the midnight deadline, effectively ending three provisions of that law, including the National Security Agency's bulk data collection program.

The lapse was a huge victory for privacy hawks who have called for changes to that program and others under the Patriot Act since Edward Snowden first blew the lid off the NSA's domestic surveillance programs in 2013.

The National Security Agency officially shut down the bulk metadata collection program officially at 7.44 pm Sunday night, a senior government official told CNN.

Officials had previously indicated they would shut the program down around 8 p.m. to ensure all procedures were in place before midnight military time.

20:42   Rahul to visit Ambedkar's birth place on Tuesday
Continuing his campaign of reaching out to less privileged sections, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi will be visiting Mhow tomorrow, the birthplace of Dr B R Ambedkar around whose work and ideology struggles of the suppressed classes are centred.

The visit is a prelude to the Congress' plans to celebrate the 125th birth anniversary of the Dalit icon next year in a grand way and come closer to the community, which was once its vote bank.

According to the All India Congress Committee, Rahul is expected to reach Indore at 12 noon and garland the statue of the architect of the Indian Constitution at Mhow, around 25 km from here, around 1 pm.
He will address a public meeting in the afternoon and interact with Dalit leaders and activists in the evening before returning to Delhi, an AICC statement said.

20:06   Good to eat! Tested Maggi, lead within safe limits, says Nestle
Under fire over Maggi issue, Nestle India today said it has got tested samples of the noodle brand in an external laboratory as well as in-house and the product has been found "safe to eat" with lead levels within the permissible levels for consumption.

The company was, however, silent on presence of the taste enhancer monosodium glutamate in the famous 'two-minute' noodle brand. Nestle India further said it is "fully cooperating with the authorities who are conducting further tests and we are awaiting their results".

"We have also submitted samples of Maggi Noodles from almost 600 product batches to an external laboratory for independent analysis and we tested samples from almost 1,000 batches at our accredited laboratory," the company said in a statement.

These samples represent around 32 crore packets, as one batch comprises of about two lakh packs. All the results of these internal and external tests show that lead levels are well within the limits specified by food regulations and that Maggi noodles are safe to eat, it added. "We are sharing these results with the authorities," the company said.

19:55   Salman's court hearing under Arms Act put off till July 20
Salman Khan's trial under Arms Act in the court of the chief judicial magistrate in Jodhpur has been put off till July 20 in the wake of the actor challenging the lower court's verdict in the high court.

Khan was supposed to present his side in the court today but his counsel H M Saraswat moved an application seeking deferment in the wake of stay on the trial granted by the high court until the petition was decided. "We had moved a criminal miscellaneous petition in the high court seeking permission to call 5 prosecution witnesses for re-examination. The court allowed the same on May 28 and stayed the hearing in the trial court," said Saraswat.

The hearing will now take place in the court of the chief judicial magistrate (Jodhpur district) on July 20 subject to decision of the petition in the high court, where the matter has been listed for July 8.

Salman had appeared in the trial court for recording of his statements on April 29, where he had pleaded innocence. The court had then given him a chance to produce evidence on May 4. But before this could happen, the session court had stayed the trial after Khan's petition seeking permission to call 5 prosecution witnesses. Following this petition, the trial was held up, with the court giving the fresh date of June 1.

19:46   India, US to sign new 10-year defence framework tomorrow
Defence Secretary Ashton Carter will arrive tomorrow, on a two-day visit to the country, during which he will visit the Eastern Naval Command besides holding talks with top leadership in New Delhi on joint development of defence technology.

India and US will also sign new 10-year defence framework, which was decided during the visit of American President Barack Obama in January.

Carter will arrive at Vishakapatnam first and hold talks with senior navy officials there, before flying in to the national capital, officials said. American officials have said this indicates the significance Pentagon attaches to India's modernisation of its navy.

In Vishakapatnam, the US defence secretary will visit the indigenous Shivalik class stealth multi-role frigate, INS Sahyadri.

In New Delhi, in addition to holding talks with his Indian counterpart Manohar Parrikar, Carter would also meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday.

Carter had last week said the US is looking for new ways to complement India's 'Act East' policy and find meaningful areas of cooperation in the Asia Pacific.

19:20   Uber horror again: Driver accused of sexual assault in Delhi
Uber is in trouble once again.

A woman passenger in Delhi has accused an Uber driver of sexually assaulting her while driving her to Gurgaon. The woman's brother lambasted Uber, an app-based taxi service, in a Facebook post that has been shared several hundred times, NDTV reports.

"My sister availed your cab service, last night for Gurgaon & your driver Vinod tried to kiss her forcibly & even after registering complaint with you morons there has been no action, no update form your end," said the woman's brother in his Facebook post, that drew comments of outrage against Uber, which was banned for a short while in Delhi last year after one of its drivers allegedly raped a woman passenger.

Uber said in a statement posted as a comment to the Facebook post that "immediate action has already been taken" against the driver, even as it investigates the complaint.

In December last year, a 27-year-old finance executive of a Gurgaon-based company alleged that the driver of an Uber cab drove her to a deserted place after she fell asleep in the vehicle and raped her. Uber's service was suspended for some time.

18:20   Saurabh Kalia case: Govt WILL go to International Court if SC allows, says Sushma
Just in: So, the government has blinked. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj says the Saurabh Kalia is exceptional and the government will go to the international court if the Supreme Court allows it. The government will change the affidavit if the Supreme Court allows it, she said today.

In a huge blow to the families of the martyrs, the Central government has refused to move the International Court of Justice against the treatment meted out to the war heroes.

The Narendra Modi government has said that moving the ICJ against Pakistan in the matter is not 'practical'. The Centre's reaction comes after Captain Kalia's family had demanded for an international probe in the Supreme Court.

Captain Kalia, along with five other soldiers, was taken prisoner by Pakistani troops during the Kargil war in 1999. They were held captive and allegedly tortured before their bodies were handed back to India June 9, 1999.

This incident had caused an uproar across the nation, as the torturing of prisoners of war is against the Geneva Convention.

Meanwhile, Pakistan has consistently denied the charges of torture, stating that the soldiers may have died because of poor weather conditions.

16:57   Room No 4 at KEM to be named after Aruna Shanbaug
Nurses at KEM hospital in Mumbai, today remembered their colleague Aruna Shanbaug, who passed away three weeks ago, on her birth anniversary with the hospital administration deciding to name Room No 4, where she stayed for 42 years, after her.

"We have decided to name Room No 4 after Aruna," KEM hospital dean Dr Avinash Supe told PTI. "The room will also be used for the public and staff," he added.

Shanbaug, a nurse at the hospital, existed comatose in the room after being subjected to a brutal sexual assault in 1973 by a ward boy, who tried to throttle her with a dog chain, leaving her in a permanently vegetative state. The hospital nurses fondly remembered Shanbaug and visited her room in the morning to offer tributes. They put flowers and cut a cake. Had she lived three weeks more, she would be celebrating her 68th birthday. A commemorative programme was also organised in the hospital auditorium by the nursing staff.

15:31   B'desh factory owner charged with murder over 2013 building collapse
Bangladesh factory owner and 41 others to face murder charges over 2013 collapse that killed more than 1,100 people. The eight-storey Rana Plaza factory building near Dhaka collapsed on 24 April.

The building had housed at least five garment factories. A number of people were arrested and charged with causing deaths by negligence. Protesters had also taken to the streets calling for the death penalty for the Rana Plaza's owner, Mohammad Sohel Rana.

Just a day before the collapse, the building was briefly evacuated when cracks appeared in the walls. However, workers were later allowed back in or told to return by the factory owners.

Thirteen people, including the owners of a garment manufacturing unit, were charged with culpable homicide for the deaths in Bangladesh's deadliest factory fire.

We are going to press murder charges against 41 people including the owners of the building, Sohel Rana and his parents, later today, Bijoy Krishna Kar, the lead investigator for the Bangladeshi police, said. It was a mass killing. All 41 of those charged have a collective responsibility for the tragedy.

If convicted, the accused could face the death penalty, he added.

15:19   A promise to redeem
The issue of implementing the One Rank One Pension (OROP) principle for the veterans of the defence services continues to be in the news for all the wrong reasons, with a final announcement nowhere in sight.

With the Narendra Modi government in its second year, its major poll promise of OROP remains unfulfilled. While Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Ministers have reiterated the government's commitment to the scheme, that by itself does little to contain the growing unhappiness in the community of ex-servicemen that has been waiting for years for a fair deal. 14:25   One injured in two grenade attacks at mobile tower in Srinagar
Another grenade attack on a mobile tower in Habbakadal, Srinagar, J&K, today, reports Mukhtar Ahmad/Rediff.com in Srinagar.

One person was injured when militants attacked two mobile towers in the heart of the Srinagar this afternoon.

A senior police officer said militants tossed a grenade inside the compound of a house in Gadoodbagh Habbakadal locality of the city where two mobile towers are located.

This is the first attack on the cellular facilities in the capital city after a string of attacks in north Kashmir Sopore, Pattan and Handwara towns that left two persons dead and three others wounded.

The officer said the injured person identified as Imtiyaz Ahmad Ahangar was taken to hospital. An unknown militant outfit has been threatening various telecom companies to wind up their operations in Kashmir.

A little known militant group Lashkar-e-Islam issued threat posters in Sopore and other parts of Baramulla on Friday and asked telecommunication companies to wind up their operations if their equipment was not returned.

The militant group has warned telecomm operators, tower land owners and mobile franchisees that if they don't stop their work, they will be targeted.

Capt Kalia from the 4 Jat Regiment was the first Indian Army officer to observe and report the large-scale intrusion by the Pakistani Army into the Indian side of the Line of Control in the Kargil sector of Jammu and Kashmir in 1999.

When their bodies were handed over to India, the autopsy reports revealed extreme torture including cigarette burns, ear drums pierced with hot iron rods and amputated limbs.

The then interior minister of Pakistan, Rehman Malik had claimed that Kalia may have been killed by extreme weather. Captain Saurabh Kalia's father NK Kalia wants the Indian government to raise the matter with the International Court of Justice.

13:51   I would rather quit politics than insult our martyrs: PM on Saurabh Kalia
PM Narendra Modi reacts to the Saurabh Kalia issue. "There is no question of insulting our martyrs who give everything to the nation. I would rather quit politics than insult our martyrs."

In a big blow to the family of Indian Army Captain Saurabh Kalia, who was tortured by the Pakistan Army in 1999 during the Kargil conflict, the Narendra Modi government has refused to move the International Court of Justice against Pakistan.

The National Democratic Alliance government has told Parliament that it has no plans to pursue the matter in the international court of law.

The government now says that moving the ICJ against Pakistan, as demanded by Kalia's family, will not be feasible.

The Centre's decision is surely to invite wrath, as the Bharatiya Janata Party had criticised the United Progressive Alliance for not acting out.

The UPA government had in 2013 told the Supreme Court that it is bound by Simla Agreement of 1972, so it can't treat Saurabh Kalia's case as a war crime.

The former president of the local organising committee for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Danny Jordaan, admitted that the organisation he headed paid $10 million in 2008 to FIFA, although he denied that it was a bribe.

Jordaan's remarks, published on Sunday in the Sunday Independent, comes days after an FBI investigation accused top FIFA officials of receiving $10 million from South Africa in exchange for their support in the final vote to choose the host country for the 2010 world soccer championship.

Both the South African government and the South African Football Association, of which Jordaan -- who was recently named mayor of the city of Port Elizabeth -- is president, have denied that any payment was made in exchange for votes to organise the Cup.

According to Jordaan, the $10 million was paid to the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football -- CONCACAF -- to promote the development of soccer in the region.

The president of CONCACAF at that time was Jack Warner, who was also the president of FIFA and who, according to the FBI investigation, took the alleged $10 million bribe in exchange for voting for South Africa and securing the support for that country's candidacy from two other voting members.

08:31   Modi to be first Indian PM to visit Israel
Narendra Modi will be travelling to Israel, the first by an Indian prime minister to the Jewish country with which bilateral defence cooperation is on an upswing.

No dates have been finalised for PM Modi's visit which will take place on mutually convenient dates, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said.

Swaraj said she will be travelling to Israel this year, besides Palestine and Jordan.

India had established "full" diplomatic relationship with Israel in 1992 though it had recognised the country in 1950.

No Indian prime minister or president has ever visited that country.

The finance ministry has came out with new three-page income tax return (ITR) forms, dropping the controversial provision for mandatory disclosure of foreign trips and dormant bank accounts, while it also extended the last date of filing.

A new form ITR 2A has been brought out by the Finance Ministry which can be filed by an individual or HUF (Hindu undivided family) who does not have capital gains, income from business/profession or foreign asset/foreign income.

The statement also said that the last date for submission of tax returns will be extended to August 31, 2015.

08:27   Monsoon misses forecast date, likely to hit Kerala coast by June 4
Any immediate respite from heat is unlikely for a few more days as the monsoon which was expected to hit Kerala on May 30, is delayed. The MET department has said that the monsoon is now expected to hit the Kerala coast by the June 4, three days after its normal onset date.

The Southwest Monsoon had advanced over the Bay of Bengal by May 21. However, its progress has been sluggish because of anti-cyclone in the Arabian Sea.

According to DS Pai, lead monsoon forecaster of the Indian Meteorological Department, conditions are still not favourable for the progress of the monsoon and there will be a delay.

The IMD, in its preliminary forecast, had said that the Southwest Monsoon rains will hit the Kerala coast on May 30. By May 21, the southwest monsoon advanced over the Bay of Bengal touching southern parts of Sri Lanka. But here on, the monsoon stagnated for a week. The progress has been sluggish because of anticyclone in the Arabian Sea.

"Because of this, it is also not getting strength. We are expecting the monsoon to hit the coast by June 4," Pai said.

Southwest Monsoon is known for its truant nature and it generally defies predictions. This year, the Monsoon current lost strength after reaching Hambantota in Sri Lanka. The Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) remained stagnant there for over a week.

"As of now, Kerala is receiving only patchy rains. We can expect Monsoon to set in over Kerala only after June 3," said Skymet, a private forecasting agency.

08:24   PM's assurance on One Rank One Pension: Ex-servicemen want a timeline
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's assurance on the issue of roll-out of 'One Rank, One Pension' scheme on Sunday was met with skepticism with ex-servicemen seeking a firm timeline and the Congress saying he has further compounded the problem by saying it was a "complex issue".

Though Modi vowed to address the "vexed" OROP issue in his monthly 'Mann Ki Baat' programme on radio and said he should be given some time, the miffed ex-servicemen also appeared to be in no mood to call off their planned protest on June 14 over the delay in its implementation.

"Assurance without a firm date does not really satisfy the ex-servicemen community. What we are looking for is a date? Assurance has never been in doubt. We are wanting to know when. We are not looking for 'Khairaat'(doles). We are looking for sense of justice for our due demand," Lt General (Retd) Raj Kadyan said.

He said the only way the protest can be deferred is if the government gives a firm date. "We don't want to protest, it's not good for the country but we should not be compelled to do it," he added. Congress leader Ajay Maken said the prime minister has chosen to further "compound" the problem, "confuse" the entire issue by creating another "flutter" by saying OROP is a "very complex issue."

"So, isn't it surprising Prime Minister after one year that one of your important demands OROP earlier, which was implemented by the UPA Government and Rs 500 crore set aside for Vote on Account in February 2014. Now, one year after assuming power, you tell the country that it is the complexities, of which you never knew earlier," Maken said.
