AirAsia Flight QZ8501 exploded after hitting the water, an Indonesian National Search and Rescue Agency official said, citing an analysis of debris patterns from the doomed jetliner. The official, who wished to remain anonymous, said that he came to that conclusion because part of the plane's tail was broken into pieces and a flight data recorder was thrown more than a kilometre. Searchers said they had found both flight recorders in the Java Sea, a major breakthrough in the effort to figure out why the plane crashed last month.
