Just in: A PIL has been filed in the Delhi HC seeking a stay on the Delhi government's decision to allow even and odd number cars to ply in the city on alternate days.

In a move to curb increasing pollution in the national capital, the Delhi government has come up with a radical proposal. From January 1, 2016, cars with even and odd number plates will ply on alternate days according to the plan mooted by the state government.

Delhi in recent times have received lots of flak for degrading air quality and this move can be seen as a reaction to it.  Delhi High Court on Wednesday had compared the situation in Delhi to  "living in a gas chamber". The court asked the state and central government to come up with a comprehensive plan.

The Kejriwal government's experiment to restrict the number of private cars on Delhi roads got a boost with the new Chief Justice of India, TS Thakur, supporting the move aimed at improving the quality of air in one of the world's most polluted cities.
