The Chennai floods picture that is breaking the Internet

It could be a scene straight out of the apocalyptic Hollywood film, 2012, except that it's very real. That's a picture of the Pallavaram flyover near the Chennai airport which is almost entirely under water. The green shrubs dotting the muddy waters in the picture are in fact tree tops.


The aerial picture was released by the Indian Air Force and is threatening to break the Internet. Nobody knows if the people stranded on those vehicles -- a few trucks and cars -- on the flyover were evacuated to safety.


Even as rains abated in Chennai after three days of heavy downpour the excessive discharge of water last night from the Chembarambakkam lake on the outskirts of the city flooded new areas, uprooting people from their homes.


Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh informed the Lok Sabha that the death toll in Tamil Nadu due to floods had gone up to 269.
