Prime Minister Narendra Modi announces Rs 1,000 crore relief to Tamil Nadu for flood relief operations. This will be over and above the Rs.940 crore given by the Centre earlier. Tamil Nadu CM J Jayalalithaa had asked for Rs 8,481 crore aid from the centre last week.

PM Modi made the announcement after an aerial survey of flood-affected areas of Chennai, Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur districts in Tamil Nadu.

Modi said the government stands by the people of Tamil Nadu in their hour of need.

The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) on Wednesday estimated that the financial loss due to the rains may exceed Rs.15,000 crore.

Small and medium enterprises, automobile and engineering industries, information technology (IT), ITeS, textile, tourism and a host of other sectors have been badly affected by the biggest rainfall in a 100 years.
