Giriraj video on Sonia goes viral inside Parliament seconds after apology

As Lok Sabha is set to resume its budget session at 2 pm after two adjournments, what we can tell you is that the 1st day of the reconvened session of Parliament lacked spark. Lacklustre showing by both BJPa and Congress MPs, notwithstanding some amount of ruckus and a video that went viral.

The day began with Congress MPs barely bothering to acknowledge the Gandhis inside Parliament. Even Central Hall wore a deserted look.

Part of the reason, of course, is that the Rajya Sabha is not in session and much of the Lok Sabha MPs spent their time catching up with each other or the news, while digging into snacks served from the subsidised canteen.

Possibly the only Congress MP who attempted to speak to Rahul Gandhi was family loyalist Kamal Nath. Rahul, however, headed to friend and colleague Jyotiraditya Scindia's seat and began chatting with  him.

Once the session began, Congress MPs, in what is a pre-planned move, rushed to the well of the House to demand an apology from BJP MP Giriaj Singh for his comments against Sonia Gandhi.

On the way to the well of the house, they did their "pranams" to Sonia who was seated in the first row.

Mallikarjuna Kharge, who is leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, wanted to attract the attention of Speaker Sumitra Mahajan and began protesting loudly. Sonia was seen asking Kharge to lower his voice and calm down.

It was a planned strategy to embarrass the government and wring an apology on the floor of the House except for a crucial miscalculation. Giriraj Singh was not present in the house.

So, it was union minister M Venkaiah Naidu who called up Giraj and asked him to rush to the Lok Sabha and apologise.

That is what ensured the smooth passage of Question Hour.

Despite the apology, it was the BJP who had the last laugh (literally) in the house on the Giriraj issue.

When Speaker Sumitra Mahajan adjourned the house for 20 minutes, within a few seconds the video clip of Giriraj Singh's comments on Sonia Gandhi, went viral inside the Lok Sabha.

Union Ministers gathered around each other and watched the video clip on their phones. BJP MP Ananth Kumar was seen holding an iPhone while Hukumdev Narain Yadav, a BJP MP from Madhubani, were cracking up watching the video.

Quite naturally, Sonia Gandhi and a few Congress leaders were upset at the behaviour.

Lip service apology.
