BPT serves eviction notice to building housing Cafe Mondegar

Cafe Mondegar, that bohemian pub so beloved of Mumbaikars for its casual yet warm ambience, is among the properties that may be have been served an eviction notice. 

Blog Mumbaiwalla reports that 'the Mumbai Port Trust has served an eviction notice to all tenants of Metro House building in Colaba including the iconic Cafe Mondegar for criminal violations of the lease agreement.'   

The occupants of the building have been six months to vacate the property, and the deadline expires this Sunday, it reports. 

The eviction notice, served on November 19, 2014, says that the lessee of the building, Metro House Pvt Ltd, has flouted every possible term of the lease including multiple instances of illegal subletting and alterations, unauthorised constructions of mezzanine floors, lofts, installation of mobile towers -- besides unpaid rent, service tax and interest. 

Among the 23 occupants of the building are Hardcastle Restaurants (which operates a McDonalds outlet on the premises), Hotel Regal Plaza and Metro Shoes, and all of them have been served the eviction notice.   

Mumbai Port Trust chairman Ravi Parmar confirmed to Mumbaiwalla: 'We have served a notice terminating the lease of Metro House. After the notice period expires on April 19, we will start eviction procedure. This is a criminal proceeding under the Law of Contract for which the police can take action.'
