Chief Election Commissioner V S Sampath is demiting office on January 15, 2015. PM Narendra Modi already has two or three names in mind to replace election commissioners.

Modi has figured that in December 2014, the appointee would be 58 or 59 years of age and would be therefore in a position to conduct the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. A Gujarati, now posted in Gandhinagar is expected to assume office.

It remains to be seen if Modi can get his man to replace election commissioner HS Brahma, who will have the briefest tenure as CEC in the body's history -- just three months. He turns 65 years in January, which is the criteria for demiting office.
