35 Indian fishermen among 40 prisoners to be released by Pak tomorrow

Pakistan informs of its intention to release 40 Indian prisoners tomorrow, the MEA says. Of these, 35 are fishermen. Arrangements are being made at Wagah.

On Wednesday, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had told the Lok Sabha that over 200 Indian fishermen are presently in Pakistan's custody.

"In respect to Pakistan, as per figures provided by Pakistan authorities on July 1, 2014 under a bilateral information exchange mechanism, there are 210 Indian fishermen and 37 fishermen believed to be Indians (nationality status awaiting confirmation) currently in Pakistan's custody," she told Lok Sabha while replying to a question.

In addition, there are 740 Indian fishing boats believed to be in Pakistan's custody.

The SAARC summit which ended yesterday was salvaged by the warm handshake and a brief chat between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif.
