Obama pushes Myanmar on minority groups rights
November 14, 2014  02:25
U.S. President Barack Obama pushed Myanmar in meetings Thursday to allow its stateless Rohingya population to call themselves by that name and to allow them full access to humanitarian aid after sectarian attacks halted relief earlier this year.

Obama's pressure on Myanmar President Thein Sein reflects a deepening rift between Myanmar and the international community over the treatment of the ethnic Rohingya, a Muslim minority that most citizens in the Buddhist-majority country refer to as Bengalis, saying they are illegal migrants from neighboring Bangladesh rather than a distinct group entitled to citizenship.
