Goa Health Minister Laxmikant Parsekar has been chosen as the state's next chief minister.

BJP leader Rajiv Pratap Rudy announced this after a legislature party meeting.

Parsekar was chosen unanimously, said Rudy, who along with BS Yeddyurappa was sent to Goa by the party's central leaders as observers.

Manohar Parrikar, who is expected to become the next defence minister of the country, earlier resigned as Goa chief minister.

He faxed his resignation letter to Governor Mridula Sinha at Raj Bhavan this afternoon, after meeting the Archbishop.

"The swearing-in of the new CM would be held at 4 pm," Parrikar said minutes before faxing his resignation.

With his resignation, entire state cabinet comprising 12 ministers, two of which were from Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party, was dissolved.
