Is the resignation of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday the first sign that his Janata Dal-United may be moving towards an alliance with Lalu Yadav Rashtriya Janata Dal?

Nitish Kumar has a tenuous majority in the Bihar assembly, after he pulled out of the alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Lalu's RJD has 22 members in the assembly and could provide stability. The JD-U is also hoping to convince the Congress to offer outside support. This could well be the beginning of a grand secular alliance that could take on the ascendant BJP when assembly polls come around next year.

It could also be the seed for a pan-India secular alliance that may also include parties like the Trinamool Congress, AIADMK, Biju Janata Dal and other secular regional parties.
