India's new Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi reverses former solicitor general Gopal Subramaniam's opinion. Rohatgi says that governors can be questioned while they are in office. The SG had said governors can be questioned and prosecuted only if they demit office.

This comes in the wake of the CBI today questioning West Bengal Governor MK Narayanan as a "witness" in connection with its probe into allegations of bribery in the Rs 3600-crore VVIP chopper deal with Anglo-Italian firm AgustaWestland.

Narayanan (80) was asked to appear before CBI officers to record his statement in connection with the deal as he was part of the group which had gone into the tendering procedures before purchase of the helicopters, CBI sources said.

Appointing Sheila Dikshit as Kerala governor was one of the last decisions of the Congress-led government a day before the announcement of dates for the national election. Dikshit, who lost power in Delhi in December after three terms, faces allegations in connection with the alleged misuse of funds meant for the 2010 Commonwealth Games and irregularities in college recruitment.
