West Bengal CM had approached cricket great last week

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee scored a coup of sorts by getting actor Mithun Chakraborty to agree for a Rajya Sabha nomination, but she may not be so lucky with cricketing legend Sourav Ganguly, it seems.

That she sounded out the greatest Indian cricket captain, till MS Dhoni came along that is, is old news. Even the BJP, it was reported, was keen to rope in Sourav, who is perhaps the second biggest crowd-puller in Bengal, after Mamata herself.

However, The Telegraph of Kolkata reports that the ex-captain has nixed the proposal that would have placed him alongside his former colleague, Sachin Tendulkar, in the Upper House.

The newspaper quotes a 'well-placed source' as saying: "The offer was made last week. Sourav conveyed his regrets as he has no intention of joining politics."

Will Narendra Modi succeed where Mamata Banerjee couldn't? Let's wait and see.
