Sunita Murmur was 15 years old when the man in charge of the village she lived in ordered a group of men to strip her naked and drag her around the neighborhood as punishment for violating strict local customs governing relationships.

"I was in love with a boy from another community," Murmur, now 19, said in an interview sitting in her tin-roofed mud home in Battala village in the eastern state of West Bengal. "And I was punished for it." Read more
