Twelve years ago a Pakistani man drew a knife around Wall Street Journal's India correspondent Daniel Pearl's throat. One can be excused for thinking that the perpetrator is still at large. Will it surprise you to know that the person who committed the dastardly act is in fact in American custody, and has been so for the last 11 years?

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was arrested in 2003 for being the ringleader of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on America, and has been in Gitmo since then. Initially his involvement in the Pearl murder was not known, and he was 'interrogated' for his role in 9/11 -- as part of which he underwent 183 waterboardings and other harsh treatment.

But years later, as America has had a rethink, and a rethink on the rethink, on the Gitmo prisoners, Khalid, like many others of his ilk, continues to be in detention.

Will he ever undergo justice for the Daniel Pearl murder? Your guess is as good as ours, but in the meantime read Gerald F Seib's account of the saga, in the Wall Street Journalhere.
