At 54, Punjab police chief S S Saini is the youngest director general of police. Now he is also the most heavily guarded.

Following an intelligence alert that he is on the hitlist of the Khalistani terrorist group, Babbar Khalsa International, Saini's security detail has been beefed up further.

Given Z plus security cover so far, Saini already has 50 personnel from the Punjab police and the CRPF who man his house and the police headquarters. Now, following the decision to heighten his security cover further, he will have 32 more men guarding him, making him more heavily guarded than his Jammu and Kashmir counterpart.

The Punjab DGP has a fleet of five cars protecting him when he is on the road, including one jammer, while he himself travels in an armoured vehicle. An estimated Rs 10 lakh is spent on his security every month.

Saini was the bane of Khalistani terrorists when the state was being overrun by them, and they have not forgotten or forgiven him for driving them into the ground.
