Centre opposes plea of Rajiv Gandhi convicts in SC
February 04, 2014  12:24
The Centre today opposed in the Supreme Court the plea of convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case seeking commutation of death sentence to life imprisonment.

Death convicts did not go through torture, agony and dehumanising experience during pendency of the mercy pleas, the Centre told SC. There has been delay in deciding the mercy plea but the delay is not unreasonable, unexplainable and unconscionable to commute death sentence, it added.

It is not a fit case for commuting death sentence, the Centre told the apex court.
