Govt defends decision to sack Mizoram governor
August 07, 2014  11:46
The government today justified the sacking of Kamla Beniwal as the governor of Mizoram, even as the opposition accused it of "political vendetta". "Action was taken as per Constitution. There are serious allegations against Kamla Beniwal," Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu said. "The government has taken note of that and taken action. There is no politics behind it. Action against Beniwal is not violative of Supreme Court verdict and the decision was taken within the rules and the constitutional framework," Naidu said.

Beniwal, who was earlier the Gujarat governor, had differences with Narendra Modi when he was the chief minister. The 87-year-old had challenged the Modi government on the appointment of a Lokayukta.
