White House denies plan to cut aid to Egypt's military

The White House reaction to reports that the USA is preparing to suspend some aid to Egypt because of the Egyptian military's suppression of political opponents shows the difficulties of using such aid to influence a regime in the midst of a power struggle, an analyst says.

"You're basically putting pressure on the military when they're dealing with a major and increasingly violent crisis," said Anthony Cordesman, a Middle East analyst at the Center for Strategic and International Studies who has advised the U.S. State Department, Defense Department, and intelligence community.
