Congress moves the Election Commission against BJP CM candidate in Delhi, Harsh Vardhan, accusing him of making "distorted claims" on polio eradication.

Dr Harsh Vardhan had played a major role in eradicating polio in the country. The party claimed that most of the progress in polio eradication happened during Congress rule. The letter addressed to states Chief Electoral Officer Vijay Dev, the party wrote: It is to bring to your kind notice that Dr Harsh Vardhan, a BJP candidate from Krishan Nagar assembly constituency, Delhi, has been campaigning for himself and his party and have also issued advertisements.

One such advertisement is continuously being broadcasted on F.M. radio channels, which is false, misleading and in violation of Model Code of Conduct. He was Health Minister, Delhi prior to 1998 when the B.J.P. government was ousted by the Congress Party.

He has claimed in the advertisement that he made Delhi Polio free but according to the official records available even on the websites, his claim is contrary to the records. It is revealed from the records that in 1998 there were 47 polio cases and 1999 the no. of cases were 73.

This by itself would show that his claim is false and misleading. If Delhi would have been left polio free by B.J.P. in 1998, the no. of cases in 1998-1999 would have been nil. Even in 1999 the no. of cases came to be 73 because of the earlier mismanagement by them."
