A Singh deemed too dark for fair play

Seventy-six years ago, insult was heaped upon injustice because his surname was Singh. He was not even Indian.

Wilmeth Sidat-Singh was allowed to join Syracuse University's football team in 1937 for a game against the University of Maryland because the latter was told that Singh was an "Indian' name.

The sports authorities of Maryland assumed he was Native American as they were unfamiliar with Indian or native names.

But when the Syracuse players arrived at the stadium and the Marylanders discovered that Singh was not white as they had expected, they refused to take the field unless Singh, a quarterback and the star player of his team, was excluded from the game because of the colour of his skin.  Read more
