Pranab again! Rejects mercy plea by 4 of Veerappan aides
February 13, 2013  18:02
President Pranab Mukherjee is learnt to have rejected the mercy plea petitions of four of dreaded sandalwood smuggler Veerappan.

The Supreme Court in January 2004 awarded Gnanprakasham, Simon, Meesekar Madaiah and Bilavendran the death sentence for the killing of 21 policemen in a landmine blast at Palar in Karnataka in 1993. Originally given life imprisonment by the Mysore court, the foursome were given death by the apex court after the government moved it.

However, so far there has been no confirmation of the move by the President's office, as it is up to the home ministry and/or the Karnataka government to do so.
