AP to set up GoM on 'functional independence' of police force

Andhra Pradesh government has decided to constitute a Group of Ministers (GoM) to study all relevant issues for granting "functional independence" to the state police force in tune with orders of the Supreme Court.

The GoM will also make appropriate recommendations for a comprehensive Police Act in accordance with with the modern day challenges and developments.

The state Cabinet, which met this evening, discussed the apex court's orders in Prakash Singh case and the need for a comprehensive Police Act.

In a note released after the Cabinet meet, Principal Secretary (Home) T P Das said the government had already issued executive orders for implementing five out of seven directives of the supreme court, pending requisite legislation.
