Just in: The sedition charges against cartoonist Assem Trivedi have been dropped. The Maharashtra government decided to drop the charges against the Kanpur-based cartoonist and conveyed the decision to the Bombay high court today. Accordingly, the police have been instructed to make the changes in Trivedi's case and he will now be chargesheeted for dishonoring the national symbols, emblem and parliament.

In September, he was charged under the sedition law, for sending offensive messages under the Information Technology Act and under the law for Prevention of Insults to National Honour. The complainant took particular exception to Trivedi's cartoon showing the national emblem with three wolves instead of lions and the words Bhrashtameva Jayate (only corruption triumphs) instead of Satyameve Jayate.
