Abortion row: Husband helplessly watched wife die

The Savita Halappanavar story: A distraught husband has described how he held his wife's hand as she died from blood poisoning caused by a miscarriage after Irish doctors refused to perform an abortion.

Praveen Halappanavar, 34, said that he begged doctors to carry out the procedure but they refused to do so because she was 'in a Catholic country' and the foetus's heartbeat was still present.Instead, he claims, the 31-year-old dentist, who was 17 weeks pregnant, lay in agony at Galway University Hospital for days until she succumbed to septicaemia.
