West Indies vs New Zealand, at Port Elizabeth

  • West Indian Nixon McLean was making a comeback after missing 40 matches since his last ODI appearance against South Africa at Grenada on 6-5-2001.
  • Daniel Vettori became the 13th New Zealander to appear in 100 or matches. Vettori who made his debut in March 1997 became the 126th player in ODIs to reach this landmark.
  • The only other time Vettori opened the New Zealand batting was against South Africa at Kallang in Singapore on 25-8-2002. He had then made a duck and lasted just three balls!
  • The 64 run partnership between Nathan Astle and Chris Cairns was New Zealand's best for the third wicket against West Indies in the WC bettering the previous best of 52 runs between Glenn Turner and Jeremy Coney at Nottingham on 16-6-1979.
  • Lou Vincent became the 21st New Zealander & 174th batsman in LOIs to aggregate 1000 runs. He was playing in his 49th match. He now 1006 runs.
  • For the first time in his ODI career in 66 matches, Wavell Hinds bowled the full quota of overs in a match. The maximum he had bowled before this was six overs (6-0-35-0) against Bangladesh at Dhaka on 8-10-1999.
  • Hinds' figures of 3-35 (in 10 overs) doubled his previous tally of three career wickets. His previous best figures were 1-6 (in 1 over) against India at Kallang in Singapore on 5-9-1999, which was his debut match.
  • The unbeaten 53 run partnership between Brendon McCullum and Andre Adams was New Zealand's best for the 8th wicket in the WC. The previous best of 48 runs was achieved on two occasions - between Dayle Hadlee and Brian McKechnie against England at Nottingham on 11-6-1975 and between Chris Harris and Dion Nash against Pakistan at Derby on 28-5-1999. New Zealand's previous best against the West Indies in the WC was the 39 runs put on by Richard Hadlee and McKechnie at Nottingham on 16-6-1979.
  • McCullum (36 not out), who was making his WC debut, recorded the second highest score by a Kiwi keeper in the WC. The highest still remains the 89 by Lee Germon against Australia at Chennai on 11-3-1996.
  • New Zealand's 241-7 was its best total against the Windies in a WC match surpassing the 212-9 the Kiwis made at Nottingham on 16-6-1979.
  • The partnership of 98 between Ramnaresh Sarwan and Ridley Jacobs was now the all time best for the seventh wicket by any pair in the WC. The pair went past the previous best of 82 runs between the Kiwi pair of Stephen Fleming and Chris Harris against Pakistan at Derby on 28-5-1999.
  • It was also West Indies' best for the 7th wicket against the Kiwis in ODIs. The pair obliterates the record of 54 runs between Sherwin Campbell and Nehemiah Perry at Christchurch on 11-1-2000.
  • The Sarwan-Jacobs partnership had earlier gone past West Indies' all time best for this wicket in the WC against any team, which was the 52 run stand against Australia in the Lord's final of the 1975 WC between Bernard Julien and Keith Boyce.
  • The partnership was also the best for the seventh wicket at this ground superceding the previous best of an unbeaten 80 between South Africans Jonty Rhodes and Lance Klusener against Sri Lanka on 15-12-2000. However the West Indian pair just failed to go past the record for the seventh wicket by any team on South African soil, which still remains as the 99 for the home team's Rhodes and Shaun Pollock against Pakistan at Durban on 8-12-2002.
  • Andre Adams (35 not out & 4-44) became the first Kiwi all-rounder to score over 30 runs and claim four wickets in the same WC match. This was also the best all-round performance against the Windies in the WC.
  • New Zealand's win by 20 runs equals its largest (in terms of runs) against the West Indies. The former had won by an identical margin at Christchurch on 11-1-2000.
  • This win was New Zealand first against the West Indies at a neutral venue. The teams have met each other on neutral venues on eight occasions,  West Indies have won five and two were "no-result" matches - prior to this encounter.
  • This was New Zealand's first win on South African soil in 14 matches. Prior to this match the team had lost 11 and two matches were declared as no-result.
  • This was Adams' third man of the match award of his career in 22 matches.
