A tiara worn by Edwina, Lady Louis Mountbatten, wife of the last viceroy of India, is going on sale at Sotheby's next month. It is estimated to be worth about £150,000.
Exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston in 2000, the tiara was handed over to Sotheby's by Lady Mountbatten's daughter Lady Pamela Hicks.
"We feel very privileged to be handling the sale of this dazzling work of art that evokes pictures of the glittering world of the pre-War society that was the backdrop of Lady Mountbatten's remarkable life and career," said Martyn Downer, head of Sotheby's jewellery department.
Made around 1910 by a leading French jeweller, the tiara is pierced and millgrain set with circular-cut diamonds in a meandering scroll and trefoil motifs.
According to Sotheby's, the platinum tiara has a distinct modern feel. Its fluid symmetry sets it apart from the formal designs associated with older pieces set in silver and gold.
Describing the tiara, Sotheby's said the elegant tiara was a fitting tribute to the woman who was the epitome of glamour and beauty and who was to become the last vicereine of India.
Lady Mountbatten died in 1960 while on a tour of North Borneo with the St Johns Ambulance Brigade.
