A British Columbia supreme court judge ruled on Thursday that the trial of three men charged with bombing an Air-India flight in 1985 would be delayed until March 31, 2003.
Justice Ian Bruce Josephson postponed the trial following a request from a lawyer for one of the accused, Inderjit Singh Reyat.
"I regret that this necessary delay is occurring," Josephson said, adding, "it is obviously necessary to ensure a fair trial."
David Gibbons -- the lead counsel for Reyat -- said that the resignation of eight lawyers from Reyat's defence team meant that it was impossible to proceed in November.
The lawyers, who were government-funded, have not explained their reasons for abandoning the case after months of preparation.
Reyat, Ajaib Singh Bagri and Ripudaman Singh Malik are facing conspiracy, murder and attempted murder charges in connection with an explosion on Air-India flight 182 on June 23, 1985, which killed all 329 aboard.
