Defence Secretary Donald H Rumsfeld on Thursday warned Americans of terrorist attacks deadlier than the 9/11 strikes in New York and Washington.
Justifying the proposed $ 48 billion increase in the 2003 defence budget, Rumsfeld said the nation is vulnerable to new forms of terrorism ranging from cyberattacks to attacks on US military bases abroad to ballistic missile attacks on American cities.
"Our job is to close off as many of those avenues of potential attack as possible," he said.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday warned that Al Qaeda terrorists may have been studying American dams and water-supply systems in preparation for new attacks.
In a report to Congress, CIA Director George Tenet said rudimentary diagrams of nuclear weapons were found in a suspected Al Qaeda safehouse in Kabul, Afghanistan.
