US seeks Indian help to build
evidence against Al Qaeda

US Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Robert Muller on Monday requisitioned Indian help in building evidence against Al Qaeda terrorists.

"The Americans know our close proximity to the Afghan government of Hamid Karzai. They want us to share information about Al Qaeda terrorists," a senior official said.

He said despite President General Prevez Musharraf's ostensibly pro-American stand, his government had begun stonewalling information about the whereabouts of Osama bin Laden and Mullah Omar widely believed to be hiding in Pakistan.

"The US has a dual approach in its fight against terrorism. On the one hand it is goading a reluctant Pakistan government to help find Al Qaeda and Taliban leaders, and on the other it is seeking India's help to disgorge as much information as it can on these wanted men," the official said.

Ministry of External Affairs spokeswoman Nirupama Rao on Monday confirmed that the FBI chief would be meeting his counterpart in the Central Bureau of Investigation, P C Sharma, to discuss issues related to counter-terrorism.

She said Muller will be accompanied by Director of the US Defense Intelligence Agency, Thomas Wilson.

Indian officials on their part will be seeking information about Pak-trained terrorists active in Kashmir from the US.
