A United States Air Force plane on Friday afternoon landed at the technical area of Palam airport in New Delhi for refuelling and is said to have taken off within a few hours.
This is the first instance of America making use of India's offer of logistical support in President George W Bush's war on terrorism.
The plane, a C-130 Hercules transport aircraft, is believed to have come from Singapore and headed for the Central Asian republic of Tajikistan, which borders Afghanistan in the north.
At the time of filing this report, there was no information about the cargo being carried by the plane.
Earlier, during the 1991 Gulf war, a USAF transport plane had secretly refuelled at Bombay airport.
That facility was, however, quickly withdrawn following an uproar by political parties.
