India hopes US will freeze funds
of more terrorist outfits

India expressed confidence on Tuesday that the United States would meet New Delhi's concerns about terrorist groups operating in Jammu and Kashmir and freeze the funds of more groups as it had done in the case of the Harkat-ul-Mujahideen.

"We would like to see the list expanded to include other terrorist groups," external affairs ministry spokeswoman Nirupama Rao said in response to a question by journalists whether New Delhi would press for the inclusion of groups such as Lashker-e-Tayyiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed.

US President George W Bush on Monday ordered freezing of the American assets of Saudi exile Osama bin Laden, the main suspect in the September 11 terror strikes in the US, and 26 other outfits and individuals as part of Washington's campaign against terrorism.

"We hope we will see more of such outfits targeted as they (US) spread the net wider to deal with organisations that have used their funds to spread terrorism," she said, adding, "we are confident India's concerns will be met in course of time."

Commenting on reports that the US was contemplating lifting of sanctions imposed on Pakistan in the wake of the military coup in October 1999, the spokeswoman said it was for the US government and Congress to decide "whether there is sufficient progress towards restoration of democracy" in that country.
