Missing-presumed-dead list revised to 6,333

New York authorities have revised the list of those missing presumed dead in the terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre on September 11 to 6,333, comprising an estimated 60 nationalities.

The earlier estimate put the number at 5,422.

623 people have been officially proclaimed dead.

The number of Indian-Americans believed missing, presumed dead, now stands at 250, putting the community at the top of the worst-affected list. Two Indians have been proclaimed dead.

From the sub-continent, Bangladesh lists 50 missing presumed dead, while Pakistan has listed one dead, with no information on the number of missing persons.

NY Mayor Rudolph Guiliani, who has been spearheading the rescue effort, said that the upward revision was in line with additional information coming in about people missing from their homes since the incident. The mayor further said that hopes of finding survivors in the rubble have now been given up.

It is estimated that the rescue work could take another three months, or more, to complete. Firefighters and rescue workers talk of piles of rubble that are, at some places, over 6 storeys in height. Every bit of rubble has to be shifted piece by piece, in order to try and locate the bodies of the missing as also possible clues to the terrorist attacks.

Meanwhile, three men and one woman were arrested by Federal agents as part of the continuing investigations into the terrorist strikes.

With this, the number of those in custody, either as suspects or as material witnesses, is now estimated to be 115.
