Pak hardline groups threaten civil war

Stuck between an unrelenting United States and the pro-Taleban hawks in the country, Pakistan on Monday plunged deeper into crisis with hardline Islamic parties threatening the government with civil war if it supported Washington's impending military action against Afghanistan.

The newly-formed Council for Defence of Afghanistan and Pakistan said it would "consider any US attack on Afghanistan as an attack on Pakistan".

The council, which consists of 30 parties, warned that the nation would plunge into a civil war if Islamabad chose to cooperate with Washington.

The council called for strikes and protests across Pakistan from Friday in a bid to force the government to reverse its decision.

"If Afghanistan declares jihad against the US, we will stand by them," the council said in statement.
