Pakistan is to send a senior diplomat to Afghanistan on Monday to deliver a letter to the Taleban militia asking it to extradite terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden wanted in connection with Tuesday's attacks on US cities, CNN reported on Sunday.
It also said that the Pakistan government planned to give a three-day deadline to the Taleban to hand over Laden or face US military action.
The ultimatum comes as Islamabad makes a last-ditch effort to prevent a military strike in the region.
The decision follows a late night telephone conversation between US President George W Bush and Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf.
Taleban has all along refused to extradite bin Laden, while Laden issued a categorical denial that he was in any way involved in Tuesday's attacks.
