The Taleban's supreme commander, Mullah Mohammad Omar, has refused to be cowed down by impending retaliatory strikes by the United States against Osama bin Laden, who it suspects to be behind the suicide attacks in New York and Washington, and insisted that the fugitive Saudi millionaire was incapable of orchestrating the attack.
Following is the text of a statement by Mullah Omar issued by the Afghanistan embassy in Pakistan in which the Taleban leader forcefully defended bin Laden.
'The event in America itself is indicative of the acquittal of Osama.
Osama has no pilots. And if he has, as the United States is claiming, where did he train them?
Training of pilots is the work of a running government and not of individuals.
In Afghanistan, there is no possibility of training (pilots).
If someone claims that the people who attacked the World Trade Centre were not trained pilots it will not sound convincing.
The meticulously planned attack on the WTC can be executed only by trained pilots and not by ordinary men.
If the pilots have been trained, it should be found out where they were trained. Also the antecedents of the people who were involved in the attack need to be ascertained.
Someone is trying to link the incident to Osama unjustifiably and without any reason.
Everyone should be wise enough to think (independently).'
