Ex-Beatle's mansion to host Hindu rally

Sanjay Suri in London

The London mansion of ex-Beatle George Harrison will be used to launch a rally of Hindu saints in Britain on Saturday.

The rally at Bhaktivedanta Manor, which was donated by Harrison to the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, is part of a global tour by Hindu leaders.

India's Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee flagged off the tour, which will take the Hindu leaders to 42 countries over three months, in New Delhi on August 12.

The rally in London is expected to be attended by thousands of devotees, a spokesman for the rally told the Indo-Asian News Service. It will feature an evening of bhajans, or devotional songs, by Anoop Jalota.

The rally will be addressed by Swami Divyanand Teerth Shankaracharya of Bhanpura, Swami Chidanand Saraswati Sri Saidas Baba and female ascetic Sadhana.

All of Britain's major Hindu groups have come together to support the rally, the spokesman said. Representatives of other faiths too have been invited to witness the rally.

"This Saturday will be a turning point for Hindus," Bimal Krishna Das, ISKCON spokesman, said. "The time has come for Hindus of all sects to come together and express their hopes and concerns in a unified form."

Girdhari Bhan, president of the World Council of Hindus, said: "This is the first time in history that religious leaders of all major Hindu sects have travelled together outside India to promote unity and world peace."

"Hindus account for one-sixth of humanity and we have a global message. The rally will highlight our message and also help set the British Hindu agenda."

The British organisations include the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, the National Council of Hindu Temples, the Hindu Council of the UK, the International Centre for Krishna Consciousness, Swaminarayan Hindu Mission, Hindu Council of Brent, Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (the British wing of the RSS), and the National Hindu Students Forum.
